i have two mk1 choppers, by the seat post there is the cable run for the rear brake and gear change of course, on one of the bikes the rectangle support bracket is welded on the top and the cables run underneath, hidden, and on the other it is welded to the bottom of the bars and the cables run on show, is this an age related thing or has one of them been re-welded wrong, many thanks

Any pics mate? Sounds like you have an upturned cleat these were standard on early mk1s!

early mk1 frames have the cables run under the plate, such as tall frame mk1 1969's and also other early standard frames have the cables run under the frame too on the dated jan 1970- aprrox august 1970, from aprrox august 1970 to late 1971 the cables run on the top of the plate you will also notice on the 2 frames you have that the rear drop outs are slightly different where end of the rear tubes meet where the rear wheel nuts go as one will be flat and the other round-

all chopper grames have rivet holes..... yours must be filled in, if you got some pics put them on here-
also on the upturned early cleat frames- the 2 plates on the top tubes where the shifter sits and clamps on you should have slightly wider plate -

shine a torch down the headstock with the forks out...........will be easier to see the holes if the rivet tails are not protruding.

ok, forks are out and there is definately no sign of rivets, so it's a mk1 upturned cleat, with the wider front bracket for the gear change lever assembly with extra holes, frame number is on the rear fork, 0823371, there is also a number stamped on the frame at the top where the seat post goes in C4656E
