You can only date a mk1 from the rear hub, looks like a 1971 crossover to me though. Nice bike by the way...

it's a crossover mk1 with MK2 tooling on the rear sissy tubes.
And by sheer coincidence, it is only the 561st frame along from my Mk1 !!!!
BTW, the hub date is 72 1 which puts the frame as built anywhere from november 1st to december 31st 1971, presuming that the rear wheel is the original one.
Hmmmmmmmmm thats handy, thats just proved me right in thinking my mk1 was a 71 frame !!!
how many Chopper frames did they make a month at the nottingham factory ??

oh, and i have been told by a (now retired) raleigh dealer, that the first digit of the frame number denotes the year of manufacture.

paul, would you be kind enough to the length and height of the stripes on the chainguard (whats left of them) and the spacing aswell (if possible) for me please, i did have the full measurements myself, but lost em. I'm convinced that all the replacement transfers being made are wrong in dimensions........I just need to know by how much. Also, could you measure the position of the "Raleigh" and "Chopper" transfers aswell please ? I'll buck you a fiver for your trouble if you could do it. Oh, BTW, i "borrowed" your image of the rear hub and lined out the date for you........

most of the mk1 decal sets on ebay are totally wrong.. H in chopper is not wide enough and they allways get the spacing on the chainguard decals wrong.

manufacture of the mk2's started in mid to late 1971 so i am led to believe.
As to the MK2's, those with the number on the dropout, i was told that the letter is the month and first digit is year (as in N184*** = October (N) 1971 (1)). That said, the guy i got the info from was a raleigh dealer for many a year, so i'm tending to think he knew what he was talking about, although i'm plenty open to being corrected.
