I think I've confused myself here and ended up bidding on an unsuitable part on Ebay. Luckily I've been outbid so before I bid again I'm hoping someone can put me right. I'll try to make this simple.... - need a 3 speed hub to build a wheel for my Raleigh Bomber
- read somewhere that the axle on the Bomber is longer than Grifter/Chopper
- found out there are two hub axle lengths 5 3/4" & 6 1/4"
- bid on hub with 6 1/4" axle
- measured dropout on my NOS Bomber frame: 113mm
- looked at Ebay item description again and see 'lock nut to lock nut' measurement is 117mm (this is known as the OLN)
- start thinking this won't fit my frame and I perhaps read that the pedal axle was longer on the Bomber, not the hub axle
- confusion and much research online but still not figured out how the OLN would differ between 5 3/4" set-up and the 6 1/4" if hub shell etc all the same

That's great mushroom. Hope you didn't have to take the wheel off to measure it!
I'm wondering if, perhaps, the hub I'm looking at has got thick spacing washers on it. The parts list for the AW hub shows there were at least 4 different thicknesses ranging from 1.6mm to 6.4 mm.
That is the washer which goes on directly after the cone on the LHS and after the cone lockwasher on the RHS
