I got me a MK1 bomber last year for our annual fancy dress bike ride, bought it, rode it, shoved it in the garage with the intention of restoring ot ready for this year. I didn't get round to it untill yesterday when I wheeled the old girl out to get her ready for this years starwars themed booze run on Saturday and found more "issues" than I remembered. I've stared stripping it down and come a bit of a cropper with the bottom bracket. It's all come to bits OK from the left side but it looks like theres an insert in the R/H side that should unscrew but I've heated it and tapped it, it moved a bit but notby much so I'm wondering if it is actually threaded and removable or whether it's just pressed in and I shouldn't be walloping it??? Anyone know? Looks like she's an 81 model The offending article.....

Bottom bracket assembly is now removed (needed a bit more lube!) Ideally I'd like to convert it to taper square to allow me to fit some longer cranks as the standard ones just seem too short. Anyone done this? I can't seem to find a bottom bracket kit long enough to fit the BB shell???

I had a a bare 5 speed bomber frame with no bottom bracket and tried to a fit tapered one. There's only one which fits properly and that's an original 5 speed bomber one and they are rare as anything. I fitted one as close a size as I could get and it just mangled the shims I put in. Ended up fitting a old 5 speed cottered crank and bottom bracket in the end See my thread here raleigh-action-bikes.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=customs&action=display&thread=2175
