the only numbers I can see on the frame are on the rear left side where the wheel fits. They read 2297189, as far as I can tell...

Early mk2, they had those numbers on the rear drop outs! No proper dating way as such, but would guess at late 72! Have you got the original hub?

Looking at the hub it does say 72 on it. Hadn't noticed that before.
The original rear wheel is not on it now but i've still got it. The bike now has a ground cruiser rear wheel as it's in better condition than the original.
