Heres how I strip, clean and rebuild the 3 speed hubs.
Tools required
Basic spanner set,
Small flat screwdriver,
Pair of cone spanners,
Hammer,
Punch,
Parrafin or degreaser of some sort,
Fresh grease,
Oil.
Remove the wheel from the bike and remove wheel nuts and washers.
With a small screwdriver, gently prize the retaining spring clip from the drive hub
This will allow access to the rear sprocket, 2 spacers and the spoke protector.
Now the hub should look like this
Remove the dust cover and the lock nuts and spacers (note that the drive side spacer is the thinner of the 2)
If the lock nuts proove hard to undo use an 8mm spanner on the spindle to allow more leverage.
Next part is to remove the cones, the drive side one may be a bit stiff to start with as there is a spring on the inside of it.
Dont worry it wont ping off!!
With the cones removed the drive section can be pulled out
The ball cup is the next part to be removed. This is much easier to do on a complete wheel rather than a single hub purely because with a complete wheel you get more leverage!
Place the punch in one of the indentations and give it a firm tap with a hammer. Alternate sides to allow for an even thread break.
Next to come out is the gear ring
The next section is where it gets exciting!!
With the ball cup removed the main gear assembly can now slide out
Place the internals on the bench and start to remove all components.
The first part to remove is the clutch
There are 4 parts to this, the thrust ring, axle pin, clutch and sleeve. Easliy done!
Finally the planet cage and gear can be removed from the spindle
As you strip parts, place them into a container for degreasing
On the planet cage you have 4 planet gears and pins. These can be removed easily with a little leverage from a screwdriver if nessesary. On the other end of the cage you have 2 Pawls, This is where most of the problems occur due to seizure or snapped springs. Once again these can be removed with a little leverage with a screwdriver.
The pawl springs are VERY fine and are easily lost, please make sure you dont lose them
And there ya have it one stripped hub.
Clean all parts and replace in the opposite order.
Good luck
