My wife and I bought a Raleigh bicycle each in the mid-80s. Mine was a Pursuit and my wife's was a 5-gear Nova. These have remained in our garage largely unused since then. (I'd be surprised if either machine has covered more than 500 in its life.) Anyway. I extracted them from the garage today, pumped up the tyres and greased the chains and gears and we rode them for about an hour covering a distance of perhaps 9 miles. There isn't a lot of rust to be seen but the steelwork is a bit pitted. The chain on the Pursuit needs a link to be taken out.
My question is this. Is it worth spending any money on these bicycles to bring them to a reasonable standard. I think we'd both like to take up cycling and I guess the choice is either to spend money on these or buy something modern. Clearly, being both retired we're looking for something which is built for comfort rather than speed and the Pursuit was a bit of a beast, I seem to recall, the saddle, seemingly, being about 1/8th of an inch wwide.... If we chose the to buy new bycycles would our Raleighs, in their current states, have any value? Thanks.

Every bike is worth spending money on if you intend to use it mate.

The classic racers are becoming collectable and are nice bikes. The novas (the shopper/twenty) are also nice bikes but don't fetch big money. Ive seen the pursuits sell from £20-£100 depending on condition and the nova anything from £5 at billing to £50 again depending on condition. If there nice bikes and nice to ride why not keep them and just change the seat on the pursuit and add a gel one.
