Hi Mushroom, Whereabouts are the numbers stamped on the 5 speeds then? Mine is a three, but doesn't appear to have any that I can see - definately not as obvious as the ones you would find on a grifter for example. I just assumed you would date them from the hub (if the bike was original).

Ok I just checked they are under the seat clamp You can clearly see them on the chrome frame, on my black bomber it's in the same place but covered with thick paint and you can barely see it. Took a pic of the chrome 5 speed frame

Ah. Thanks for that. I'll have to go and check mine now. As mine is black it may well be a case of thick paint making the numbers faint as you pointed out it does with yours. I'm guessing knowing the the frame number would allow you to date it like a grifter?

Had a look at mine. Paint is really thick at the start of the number, but it looks like NE3, so April '83. Further inspection of the hub reveals it's actually stamped 83 /7 (seriously need to get my eyes tested as I originally thought it was 82 !! - in my defence it was dirty!) so that would be July '83. I'm guessing that as hub and frame dates are so close together that they are original to each other.
Looking at Paul's info in the bomber chat section on'Bomber differences' it appears that mines a mk 2 - as it has the later super grifter style seat, has plastic clips for the gear cable and a flat bar where the rear brake is attached, unusually though it has a plastic chain ring, not a metal burner style one. Perhaps this was damaged in the past or replaced? The bike arrived with some dodgy non -original pedals on, so I guess this could be an explanation, unless the Raleigh factory had a change over period between Mk1's and 2's and mine was part of that?

I've got a grifter crank and chainguard on that 5 speed Super ( now a 3 speed coaster brake ), so anyone could have changed yours over in the years gone by
