It's been 30 years since I had a bike with 3 speed on it I knew then how to set it up, but old age has crept in an lost that vital piece of information Is there a guide anywhere ? I just changed the tyres over for the blue ones and tried turning the crank. The wheel went round but as soon as I let go of the pedals the crank started turning. Does the freewheel mechanism get a bit sticky ? Do I need to pull it apart ?

sounds like you've over tightened the rear wheel/cones. und the rear wheel and loosen the cones a bit and that will cure it....... hopefully!

might have a new problem I think one of the ball bearings is missing I started cleaning the hub to adjust the cones I undid the axle nuts and slid the washers off the chain side had 2 locking washers, one was a one tab washer and the other had 2 tabs on ? other side just had a one tab washer undid the cones and took the spring out then the freewheel and chain protector just fell off, is this right ? I think I'll take it apart tonight and take more pics looking at Paul's hub stripdown it doesn't look right anyway I've thrown it all back together loosely because I had to do the midmorning schoolrun but the gearchain won't screw back in now either

also when I finally get it back together should I just pack the bearings in lithium grease or is there something special I should be using ?

that has enough bearings in that race, there is always space for one more. if the toggle dont screw back in it'll be because the little bit that it attaches to has slipped bit hard to see in this pic but theres a small bar which is usually locked in place by a cap

Thanks Paul, but should the freewheel bit and spoke protector just fall off when I undo the cones ? I'll spend more time on it tonight and take some more pics

right, took it all apart again and made sure the gearchain is screwed it before I reassemble the hub. I'm sure this isn't right. The guide won't screw down any further than this, is the axle too long or the guide the wrong one ? I checked it against my old Raleigh twenty and the axle is a lot shorter and the guide screws all the way down to the nut. Also these washers don't seem right, am I missing some nuts somewhere ?

you're missing a lock nut that holds the square washer onto the cones on the drive side and the nut is not the right one either. You also need some serrated washers on either side but i cant te;; weather you have em.
